Postgraduate Research options
The Roslin Institute offers a high quality training environment and excellent facilities. We believe graduate students contribute a vital part of a lively and forward-looking research Institute and presently we have more than 180 research students.
Within the Institute, individual students are integrated within their supervisor’s group and department, and participate fully in journal clubs, group meetings and seminar programmes. The student is expected to complete a piece of original research, directed towards solving important, novel and open questions.
We offer MScR and PhD programmes in the following broad subject areas:
- Clinical Veterinary Sciences
- Functional Genetics and Development
- Genetics and Genomics
- Infection and Immunity
- Agricultural Sciences (PhD only)
We recommend making contact with a prospective supervisor before commencing a formal application. You can contact the Postgraduate Research Administration team at rdsvs.pgr.admin@ed.ac.uk, outlining your research interests.
Alternatively, you may want to look for funded research opportunities such as studentships (see below).
The University of Edinburgh webpage for new postgraduate students provides information on many aspects of starting your studies in Edinburgh.
We offer a number of studentships each year for research postgraduates.
All PhD and MScR opportunities are advertised on our webpages and FindaPhD.com.
These opportunities are funded via various sources and include UK Research Councils, Industry and Charities as well as R(D)SVS and the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. We also welcome students who have obtained their own funding from Government sources etc.
Postgraduate funding information from the Scholarships Office
Please note that in addition to the standard tuition fees additional programme costs may also be requested at the supervisors’ discretion. These are dependent on the scope of the agreed research project. Applicants will be assessed on the University of Edinburgh entry requirements for postgraduate study (a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent, evidence of English language ability, provision of two valid references) and formally interviewed for a place on these courses.
Applicants are required to hold a first or upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
- Postgraduate studentships funded by the UK Research Councils (BBSRC, MRC, etc.) require the candidates to be UK citizens, or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to commencement of postgraduate studies.
- Less-stringent residency restrictions on eligibility for Postgraduate studentships provided by Industrial bodies and charities. These vary according to the specific funders.
- We will also consider applications from outstanding students who are able to meet University tuition fees and living expenses, through dedicated fellowships and/or private means.
From our community to our services, we are dedicated to offering you the best postgraduate experience we can.
