The Roslin Institute stand at the Royal Highland Show 2017

Researchers from The Roslin Institute and veterinary colleagues from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies welcomed visitors to our joint stand at the Royal Highland Show from 22-25 June, with activities and displays about our work at the University of Edinburgh’s Easter Bush Campus.

Record numbers of visitors attended this year’s Show and over 4000 people visited our stand across the four days.

Visitors used our new ‘Genetic Toolbox’ exhibit to explore how and why we are changing the DNA of animals to protect them from diseases and learned all about our flu virus research at the ‘Flu Fighters’ stand. Younger visitors also had a chance to make their own colourful pipe-cleaner chromosomes and play our dog-catching game to find out how Roslin scientists are working with vets at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on the Mission Rabies project, combating rabies in developing countries by vaccinating stray dogs.

On the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies side of the stand visitors explored a wide range of veterinary work, including opportunities to milk a cow, bandage a horse, learn about blood and diagnose cases using X-rays. Over 300 young people interested in a career in veterinary medicine spoke to our admissions team and took away an admissions pack with information and advice on applying to vet school.

The Royal Highland Show is a key event in The Roslin Institute’s public engagement calendar and is part of our commitment to opening up our research to the public.

Our next big event is the Easter Bush Campus Open Day on Saturday 14 October, part of the Midlothian Science Festival. The Roslin Institute and Veterinary Teaching Building will be open to the public from 12-4pm with a huge range of free activities suitable for all ages. Come and meet our researchers and vets, get hands-on with our fun, interactive activities, take a tour of our buildings and find out all about our work.
