The University’s Induction Team’s Top Tips for first semester

Our Induction Team's top ten tips for your first semester.

We hope that you are enjoying the beginning of your time here at Edinburgh! Now that things are calming down, and as you settle into the semester’s routine, you may be beginning to think about the year ahead. So we wanted to highlight 10 key tips:

1. There is a huge range of support services to help support you throughout your studies; for example, did you know about the Institute for Academic Development (IAD)? They run a variety of workshops to help you with your studies. Students often tell us that they wish they had used the services more in their first year. Don’t let that be you! You can see all of the student support services via the link below:

2. Remember that your wellbeing is important. Make sure you take care of yourself! Moving to a new place can be daunting so look after yourself and give yourself time to settle in. There are lots of services to support your wellbeing that can be seen in the web page below:

3. Work out a plan for your studies, noting deadlines and allowing time for reading, so that you can stay on top of your work and fit in the fun activities.

4. Make sure you have a clear budget for the year ahead! Click on the link below for some helpful advice and also a student budget calculator

6. Make sure you meet with your Personal Tutor or Supervisor and do any preparation that is required beforehand to make the most of your time with them.

7. Ensure that you have registered with a doctor, generally referred to here in Scotland as a General Practitioner or “GP”, either at the University or locally to where you live.

8. Explore outside of the University – the City of Edinburgh, Scotland and the entire United Kingdom have so much to offer, make the most of it! You can find out more in the link below. The links nicely to our next tip…

9. Climb Arthur’s Seat for sunrise or sunset, there is nothing quite like seeing the city from that height. Click on the link below for details:

10. Finally, this year will fly by. Enjoy it! There is no experience quite like University so make the most of it! If you haven’t already why not set yourself a pledge of what you want to achieve whilst at University? This might be challenging yourself to meet people from five different countries or volunteering in the City of Edinburgh. We want to hear your pledges and the University’s Induction Team will send them back to you later in the year to remind you what you wanted to achieve when you first started. If you didn’t already fill out your pledge during Welcome Week do it now via the link below:
