We're shining a spotlight on the range of film Short Courses available from the Centre for Open Learning this autumn.

At the Centre for Open Learning, our Short Courses programme beginning in September offers you the opportunity to explore and develop your interest in film and media with a series of online classes running once a week over ten weeks this autumn.

If your passion for film is a new thing, you could start with our Introduction to Film Studies course. Your tutor Tony McKibbin will lead this discussion based class, paying special attention to the weekly film under focus and looking into the various features of cinema using clips from numerous other films. The course will also allow you to explore and explain the significance of cinema as an entertainment and an art form.

There are some famous filmmakers we can think of offhand without too much effort: Hitchcock, Tarantino, and Luhrmann for example... However, the filmmakers we think about in the first instance tend to be male. But what about the women in the industry who have made massive inroads into a historically male environment? Over ten weeks, Female Filmmakers in Focus will introduce you to five amazing women who have made their mark on the film industry with a catalogue of exceptional work between them. By studying each of the five chosen filmmakers, you will not only get to grips with their work but will develop an understanding of cinematic concepts which can be applied immediately to film studies.

If it’s something more practical you’re looking for, our course Screenwriting 1: An Introduction to Writing for Film and Television may be just the ticket for you. This course is open to all and can be studied with or without gaining academic credit. Your tutor Douglas Dougan will take you through how to develop an idea into a workable story before guiding you on the correct way to layout and present a script in a professional manner. As well as creating your own piece of practical work, you will also learn how to critique scripts, diagnose problems and find solutions.
