Short Courses

Certificate of Higher Education Applications Are Open!

Here's everything you need to know about taking the Cert HE with the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Open Learning.

Do you love learning? Are you ready to push yourself a little further?

Then why not work towards a nationally recognised university qualification? By taking Short Courses for credit (Credit Courses) with the Centre for Open Learning you could get a Certificate of Higher Education (Cert HE).

The Cert HE is a flexible, part-time study programme which allows you to earn a nationally recognised university qualification in the subjects you are interested in.

So how does it work?

Anyone can be apply and be accepted!

The certificate is awarded once you accumulate 120 credits from taking a series of our Short Courses for credit (the equivalent usually of taking around 8 to 12 Short Courses, depending on the courses you choose). At the end of each course your work will be formally assessed, and you’ll be given a mark, grade and written feedback.

It’s really flexible, because you can select the courses you want to take, from a wide range of subjects in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and it allows you to complete your study within three to five years.

And what are the benefits of taking a Credit Course?

You can take a Credit Course even if you don’t register for the Cert HE.

By taking a Short Courses for credit, you’ll become a fully matriculated University of Edinburgh student and will gain access to a number of resources, the university libraries, student support services as well as digital resources, such as:

If you take a creative digital course that uses Adobe, you will also get a free Adobe Creative cloud licence for the duration of the course!

If you decide to sign-up to the Cert HE (at no additional cost!) you will also be allocated a Personal Tutor, who will be able to steer, support and guide you through your course choices, pathways and studies.

Cert HE student taking Art & Design credit courses will also have some additional access to practical studio space and mac computer suite, to work from in your free time (times and days may vary).

And finally…

Whilst all 2021/22 Term 1 courses are taking place online, we hope that we will be able to return to some in-person teaching in the not too distant future (COVID-19 restrictions permitting). Therefore, if you are planning to apply for the Cert HE, we recommend that you be able to travel to our campus in central Edinburgh.
