23 Aug 21. The Lancet Neurology September cover

The Lancet Neurology’s September 2021 cover features embroidery from EI research radiographer Elaine Sandeman, as part of the Cajal Embroidery project.

In 1920 a Royal Decree established the illustrious Instituto Cajal in Madrid, Spain. The Cajal Embroidery project celebrates its centenary.

This project saw 75 volunteers, across 6 countries, create 81 intricate, exquisite hand stitched panels of Ramon y Cajal’s images.

Edinburgh Neuroscience then curated & displayed these images at the virtual FENS 2020 forum.

Elaine Sandeman previously worked as an Edinburgh Imaging Research MR Radiographer in our Edinburgh Imaging Facility RIE, before she retired in December 2017.

Elaine continues to work as a Research MR Radiographer for Edinburgh Imaging to help out when we are short staffed.

We asked Elaine more about the Cajal Embroidery project & how she got involved.

“I joined the Cajal Embroidery project at the beginning of 2020 after spotting an advert in one of Edinburgh Neuroscience’s emails.

I have always dabbled in arts & crafts so this project appealed to me as it brought art & science together.

We were given details of size & colours so we all kept to a basic theme. I added in some gold & silver thread & gold beads as I am sure neurons sparkle!
