09 Mar 21. PREVENT Dementia study milestone

Congratulations to the PREVENT Dementia study team who have successfully recruited their 700th & final baseline patient.

The Prevent dementia programme aims to identify risk factors for dementia during midlife. The study has recruited 700 participants from 5 sites across the UK & Ireland. All participants undergo extensive cognitive & clinical assessments, undergo brain imaging & provide clinical samples for analysis.

The team are delighted to have reached the milestone of recruiting the 700th participant to the study & reaching their recruitment target.

After an extremely challenging year where face to face research has been almost impossible, it was great to see that the team were able to have a moment to celebrate this success, particularly after overcoming many hurdles to reach this point.

We asked Professor Craig Ritchie, Chief Investigator of PREVENT Dementia, how he felt regarding this study milestone.

“These have certainly been challenging times for all of us in all walks of life, but the dedication of the research participants & researchers in the programme has meant we remain in an exceptionally strong position to deliver some impactful results in the months & years ahead”.

Now that the team have closed recruitment their focus turns to following up all the participants in the cohort longitudinally.

They have already followed up a number of participants 2 years after they were recruited, & they will now follow-up all remaining participants at this second study visit. The PREVENT Dementia team have also now started their third wave of assessments in their participants at the London site who are now being followed up 7 years after they joined the study.
