Every year the British Neuroscience Association (BNA) awards researchers and students for their work and contribution to neuroscience.

At this year’s BNA festive symposium, the BNA Council and Committee members awarded Professor Joanna Wardlaw the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Neuroscience’ award.

Professor Wardlaw is the Chair of Applied Neuroimaging, Head of Neuroimaging Sciences and Edinburgh Imaging, Row Fogo Centre Director and UK DRI Edinburgh Group Leader.

She is internationally recognised for her work on the pathophysiology of cerebral small vessel disease and brain ageing, and the pathophysiology and treatment of acute ischaemic stroke especially thrombolytic therapy, and the use of imaging to diagnose acute stroke.

Professor Wardlaw has provided imaging and related expertise to several multi-centre randomised clinical trials and is imaging lead for several other initiatives.

She has published over 400 papers and been awarded several prizes and honorary fellowships in recognition of her work.

We asked Professor Joanna Wardlaw her thoughts on receiving this award.

"I was very surprised but delighted to receive this award since it recognises the many wonderful researchers with whom I have had the great fortune to work over the years, including those at the University of Edinburgh but also many UK and international researchers.

I was particularly pleased since it is also great recognition for the importance of blood vessels in maintaining brain health, and also of vascular disease in the brain."
