Things to do before you start
To help with your preparations, we’ve compiled a list of things you need to do before you start at the University of Edinburgh, in priority order.
Seek out immigration advice if you are not a UK or Irish citizen and you do not already have permission to study in the UK.
You will be asked to provide an image of your current passport and UK immigration permission. This could be evidence of your EU settlement scheme status, a sticker or stamp in your passport, or your Biometric Residence Permit.

|▢||Read your emails from the University of Edinburgh, especially from your School/Programmes|
|▢||Complete your matriculation (to become formally admitted as a student at the University of Edinburgh)|
|▢||Check updates from your School (so you don't miss out on key information from your School/Deanery and the University)|
|▢||Pay your fees (to organise the payment of your tuition fees|
|▢||Apply for your University card (your official student ID)|
|▢||Set up your University WIFI (set up your devices on the University WIFI before you arrive and access WIFI on campus for free)|
|▢||Register with a GP/doctor (research GP/doctors and know how to get medical assistance, you can only register once you have arrived in Edinburgh)|
|▢||(If applicable) Make early contact with the Disability and Learning Support Service to ensure the support you require is in place|
|▢||Check you have had your necessary vaccinations|
|▢||Register with a dentist and/or optician (research before your start)|
|▢||Finance your studies with scholarships and funding opportunities|
|▢||Pay your accommodation fees (if living in University-managed accommodation)|
|▢||Watch out for scams!|
|▢||Open a UK bank account - Research and explore your options|
|▢||Plan your budget|
|▢||Set up and access your personalised timetable|
|▢||Passport (proof of identity for all circumstances)|
|▢||Driving licence (additional proof of identity, if in possession of one)|
|▢||Printed proof of term-time Edinburgh address (GP Practices may ask for original proof of address)|
At least three months of any prescribed medication and an explanation letter from your doctor (for GP Registration)
In order to register with DLSS please provide the Service with suitable supporting documentation of your disability, specific learning difference, health or neurodiverse condition. This must be written in English, within the last 6 months, by a relevant medical professional, outlining your condition and how it impacts on your studies.
