Guidance on posting and messaging on the 'Interact' function of the University of Edinburgh Events app

Membership: ‘Interact’ is intended for students holding firm offers from the University of Edinburgh only. However, due to the large numbers of students with offers and as a public app, it is not guaranteed that all users will be official new students in the 2024/2025 academic year. All app users will be able to see the message-board, but users must create an account to be able to post.  

If you create an account, then other users with accounts will be able to see you on the ‘Connect’ list. They will be able to send you a request to connect, which you can accept or decline. If you accept, they will be able to send you direct messages within the app. 

To prevent users from sending you requests to connect, navigate to the Privacy Center on the app using follow these steps: 

  1. Tap the profile icon in the top right corner to log in. 

  1. Tap the gear icon to access your profile settings. 

  1. Scroll to the bottom and open the Privacy Center where you can toggle on or off your visibility status for each guide. 

Moderation: The ‘Interact’ feed is moderated by University staff within normal office hours (Mon-Fri 09:00 - 17:00). It is not possible for University staff to see direct messages sent between two users.  If you need to report anything, please email induction@ed.ac.uk in the first instance. 

Rules for posting and messaging 

No hate speech or bullying  

Bullying of any kind isn't allowed, and degrading comments about things such as race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.  

Any posts or threads that contain abusive, obscene, indecent, degrading or offensive language or media will be deleted and the post author will be blocked.   

Irrelevant Promotions or Spam will be removed   

The University of Edinburgh cannot take responsibility for incorrect/inaccurate information not directly disseminated by the University’s ‘Welcome Team’ account.  

Any posts or threads that promote or sell items, accommodation, merchandise, social media groups (e.g. WhatsApp/SnapChat/Instagram etc.) and/or event tickets not connected to the University will be deleted and the post author will be blocked.   

Do not share your personal information online  

Do not share any personal information on the ‘Interact’ feed e.g., student number, contact number, accommodation address etc. These posts will be deleted.
