Starting a postgraduate course is a big step – and we’re here to help you settle in. Whether you're a Taught or Research student, our welcome events are a great way to meet other postgraduates, get to know your community, and start your journey at the university.

Postgraduate Taught Students

Postgraduate Taught Students Welcome - Tuesday 9th September

We look forward to welcoming you to Postgraduate Taught Students Welcome event on Tuesday 9 September 2025 at 2:00 - 3:30pm in McEwan Hall.

This welcome event will focus on starting your taught postgraduate programme at the University of Edinburgh. You will be provided with useful tips, strategies, and resources to get your studies off to a strong start. 

You will have the opportunity to ask your questions about learning at postgraduate level, as well as hear from previous students about their experiences in the student panel.

3.15pm – 3.30pmFurther information about how the IAD can support you with your studies and potential to ask any further questions

No booking is required to attend this event; however, we expect it to be busy so please arrive in time to find a seat. This event will not be recorded. 

If you are unable to attend, there will be similar online workshops offered at the start of Semester One.

Postgraduate Taught Mixer - Tuesday 9th September

Join your Students' Association for an afternoon of relaxed socialising and networking with other Postgraduate Taught students.

This event takes place directly after the University's Postgraduate Taught Students Welcome Talk.

The PGT mixer will take place on Tuesday 9 September from 3:30 pm - 5:30pm at Potterrow Dome. 

A ticket is not required to attend this event, by getting a ‘register your interest’ ticket you are helping us to better plan for expected numbers and will receive communications should any details about the event change.

Postgraduate Taught Mixer - Wednesday 10th September

 Join us at Kings' Buildings to meet fellow PGT students who you'll be studying alongside on our Science and Engineering campus.

This event takes in Kings' Buildings.

The PGT mixer will take place on Tuesday 10 September from 1:00 pm - 2:30pm at Kings' Buildings House, KB Square.

A ticket is not required to attend this event, by getting a ‘register your interest’ ticket you are helping us to better plan for expected numbers and will receive communications should any details about the event change.

Postgraduate Research Students

Doctoral College Welcome - Tuesday 9th September

We look forward to welcoming you to the Doctoral College Welcome event (PGR and MsR students) on Tuesday 9 September 2025 at 12:00 - 1:00 pm in McEwan Hall.

This welcome event will share useful information about how postgraduate research is structured and supported at the University and involve short talks from each College Dean of Postgraduate Research. Doctoral College reps will also share their experiences and explain what it means to be a postgraduate researcher at Edinburgh.

This event welcomes all new research students and a great opportunity to connect with other new students. It is designed to complement local events at School and institute level.

No booking is required to attend this event. However, it will be first-come, first-served to enter and it is strongly recommended that you arrive for before the start time. 

Postgraduate Research (PGR) Mixer - Tuesday 9th September

PGR Social and Networking Session - Thursday 11th September

Book now to join us at the Playfair Library, on Thursday 11 September at 10:00 - 11:30am, for the PGR Social and Networking Session.

New PGR students, alumni and current PGR students are invited to join us for an enjoyable and informal networking session to welcome our new students to the University and the wider community.

New students can meet each other, whilst having the opportunity to learn valuable insights from alumni and current students, who themselves will benefit from making key connections.

As there are a limited number of places available, these will be allocated on first-come, first-served basis
