Careers and Employability

Careers and Employability toolkit

Your support counts

The economic situation and increased competition for student and graduate jobs may have made students more anxious about their career prospects than in previous years. Despite, or perhaps because of this, they may need a nudge and encouragement to act, and this is where you can help – timely prompts at key stages make all the difference.

Diversity and inclusion are important to us as a Careers Service and to the University. Recent surveys have highlighted ongoing inequalities and we aim to support students who may be at particular disadvantage. Please encourage any students who you feel might be in this position to contact us.

Early Years

  • Ask if they’re involved in extra or co-curricular activities – the Build Experience section of the Careers Service website is a good starting point and highlights a range of options.
  • Encourage them to start exploring career ideas – this can open their minds to possibilities.  Attending some careers events can be a great start.
  • Endorse the benefits of taking small steps – this will reduce panic and overload.

Penultimates

  • Ask about their plans for work experience and remind them everything counts – volunteering, internships, research placements, and virtual experiences.
  • Suggest they connect with UoE alumni on LinkedIn – a potential source of support and inspiration.
  • Remind them to make use of the Careers Service – we can help them find opportunities, build their networks and refine their job search.
  • Stress the benefits of making informed decisions – engaging with our careers and employer-led events programme will help.
