From jazz, classical and strings to reading music, here’s a glimpse into some of our music classes starting this July and August.
1. Classical Music: An Introduction
Starting in August, this one-day course is perfect for beginners keen to form a foundation across the realm of symphonies, concertos, chamber music and opera. No prior knowledge or experience is required and the class will take the form of a tutor-led discussion accompanied by musical excerpts.
Have you always wanted to play or sing the blues and immerse yourself in the world of jazz music? Taught without sheet music, this course takes on a practical approach to deepening jazz techniques and is ideal for all levels. No prior music experience is necessary, but if you already play an instrument, bring it along!
Do you know your staves from your clefs and your crotchets from your quavers? If not, this short workshop will walk you through the basics of writing music and show you how to transform written signs back into sounds.
Calling all history lovers! If you’re keen to dive deep into the history of western classical music, then this course is for you. By the end of the day, you’ll be able to explain the different aspects of a symphony including essential elements and symphonic structure. You’ll also be familiar with the biographies of a handful of symphony’s most gifted composers.
Are you a confident violin, viola or cello player? If you have two-to-three years string-instrument experience and are able to play by ear, this day course is for you. The workshop explores the Klezmer genre (Eastern European traditional folk music) and will introduce you to the basics and modes of this distinctive style. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to play two pieces as well as picking up some traditional dance steps to accompany the tunes!
