Boasting alumni such as poet and playwright, Sir Walter Scott, crime novelist Ian Rankin and the creator of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, the University of Edinburgh is where a variety of esteemed writers have honed their talents.

This July and August, we’re offering a range of writing based, day-time courses spanning from one week to a day. Whether you’ve set your sights on film, theatre, digital or good old-fashioned print, these summer Short Courses will help spruce up your skillset.

Write a Short Play

15-19 July 2019 | 10am-4pm | £185

Do you dream of writing a play but are unsure how to get started? This five-day course takes you on a journey through the basic principles including structure, engaging your audience, staging, storytelling, character development, dialogue and working with actors. By the end of the course, you’ll be well versed in the ins and outs of play writing and will even have completed a short piece of your own work implementing what you’ve learnt.

Storytelling

29 July-2 August 2019 | 10am-4pm | £190

From riddles to folklores, not only does this course investigate the role of storytelling in Scottish cultural heritage, it also takes you on a journey (literally) to the Scottish Storytelling Centre and throughout Edinburgh, allowing you to experience the art of storytelling firsthand visiting story-rich hubs throughout the city and surrounding landscape.

Collaborative Digital Storytelling

5-7 August 2019 10am-5pm | £140

If you’re digitally savvy, or would like to expand your abilities, look no further. This three-day technical workshop is heavily hands-on and provides practical sessions with a tutor rather than formal instruction. During the course, you will learn how to conceive, structure, write and publish a piece of multimedia content for web delivery. You’ll also leave the course being able to confidently identify both the opportunities and challenges of digital storytelling.

Exploring Scriptwriting

12-16 August 2019 | 10am-4pm | £185

From dramatic writing to writing scripts for radio, film/TV and plays, this block of classes is a must-take for any budding script writers. By the end of the five-day course, you’ll be able to differentiate and critique in addition to useful tips and next steps to furthering your writing career.
