Explore our range of Short Courses in Film, Media and Contemporary Cultures starting in January.

What’s good about January?

Loads!

The frosty days, long dark nights and relative calm after the storm of the festivities are the perfect excuse to indulge yourself. It’s a time for wholesome meals, getting lost in books and immersing yourself in learning something new.

At the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Open Learning we have a range of inspiring, and creative Short Courses starting in January - the perfect excuse for a bit of ‘me time’.

This week we’re shining the spotlight on our film courses, because what’s better than hanging out with (new) friends and exploring some cinema gems!

Take a wee look at our highlights below and start planning to do something different in 2020.

Forgotten Gems of World Cinema

The history of cinema is often a history of re-discovery.

Many films now held as classics were neglected for years by critics and audiences. Sometimes they were too obscure or daring, or they seemed out of fashion.

On this course you’ll explore some forgotten gems that will amaze you by their modernity!

Contemporary Native Americans in Film

Through lectures, discussion and analysis of film extracts and features you’ll examine contemporary Native American actors, directors and writers.

The work of Graham Greene, Adam Beach, Gary Farmer, Sherman Alexie and Gil Cardinal will be studied as you focus on the emergence of a Native aesthetic in film and the social, political and historical concerns of Native film-makers. Consideration will also be given to the relationship between Native film-making and mainstream cinema.

Film Theory and Criticism

Would you like to know more about semiotics, structuralism and gender in film?

On this course you’ll explore key concepts in film theory and criticism and apply them to excerpts from some of the greatest films in cinema history.

Join us and find out how some theoretical approaches can reveal essential forms and functions of cinema.

The Last Romantics – Powell & Pressburger and the Birth of Modern Cinema

Flamboyant and often controversial, their films mark a transition from the 'classic' style to the auteur cinema of today.

On this course you’ll explore the artistic legacy of the team through films such as ‘Thief of Baghdad’, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and ‘Black Narcissus’.
