Information on what council tax and what you need to do to ensure you are exempt from paying it whilst you are studying full-time.

Council Tax and Student Exemption
Council tax is a charge from your local council for services like transport and waste. Full-time students are usually exempt, but you may need to register.

If you live in University-managed accommodation, your exemption is handled for you.

If you live in private accommodation, you must apply to the council yourself. You may receive a 25% discount if one non-student lives with you, or a full exemption if everyone is a student.

Only provide a council tax exemption letter if the council asks for one. Keep your address up to date in MyEd—your letter can be viewed and printed from the Personal Details channel.
