This Sporting Life
Saturday 20 April witnessed over 200 lean and agile individuals take to the fields, courts and tracks of Edinburgh (and beyond) for the EUSU Alumni Sports Day.
Competitors attended from right across the UK (and from as far afield as Belgium) as 12 of the Sports Union’s 64 clubs reunited graduates with the University sports scene and helped forge links with current students via committed sporting endeavour.
Making use of the facilities
The Centre for Sport and Exercise hosted Volleyball, Basketball, Ladies Rugby, Trampoline, Badminton, Korfball, Netball, Rifle and Cricket at the Pleasance, St. Leonards and Peffermill. Athletics made use of the track at Meadowbank, whilst Triathlon enjoyed a run which began at the Meadows in the bright Edinburgh sunshine.
Bonus points are awarded to the Hillwalking Club who took a more adventurous approach with a weekend trip to the hills around Stromeferry.
A winning mentality
Each club attracted a range of participants from students and recent graduates, to those that graduated from as far back as 1965. The student experience might well have changed in the intervening years but, being sportsmen and women, the desire to win and to compete remained the same.
Points were collated at the end of the day with the students winning out by 13 points to 11. A close finish that was a credit to the alumni teams that put their sporting prowess to the test.
The Alumni Association Cup was awarded to the victorious students at an evening reception that combined live music, detailed post-match analysis and a traditional Scottish meal of haggis, neaps and tatties.
Keep in touch
The event was organised by current student and EUSU Alumni Officer, Kirsty McConnell. We would like to thank Kirsty for all her hard work and for creating this opportunity for sports alumni to reunite and reconnect with their former clubs.
It has been great to establish this event so that University of Edinburgh graduates know they are always a part of our lifelong community.
If you are interested in participating in a future sports alumni event then please contact the Sports Union Alumni Officer.
