Research Associate in Brain Imaging (structural connectivity analysis)
This one year post (vacancy 035139) is funded to perform advanced image analysis for the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 (LBC1936), a major long-term project funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and AgeUK.
The post-holder will generate accurate segmentations of cortical and sub-cortical grey matter structures, measures of cortical thickness and graph-theory metrics of structural connectivity (connectome) from high resolution T1-weighted volume and diffusion MRI scans acquired at ages 72 to 73, 75 to 76 and 78 to 79 years in the LBC1936.
The analysis will involve running both freely available software packages, such as FreeSurfer and TractoR, and locally developed tools on longitudinal structural data acquired from many hundreds of participants.
The post-holder will be part of a large team of psychologists, radiologists, physicists and computer scientists working at the University of Edinburgh on cognitive ageing in both healthy and pathological populations, within the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology (CCACE) and the Brain Research Imaging Centre (BRIC), part of Edinburgh Imaging.
The imaging data will be analysed with detailed tests of cognition, vascular risk factors, genetic profiles and related metrics to identify mechanisms underlying cognitive decline in older people.
The post is based in BRIC, an integral part of the School of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, and the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility based at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.
