Edinburgh Super-resolution Imaging Consortium

Advances in fluorescence microscopy have revolutionised our understanding of biology.

Imaging has come a long way since the invention of the first microscope, with an extensive range of microscopic techniques available and more being developed. The most recent advancements bypass the diffraction-limited resolution of conventional microscopes and enable the quantification of single molecules in space anfd time, providing invaluable information for biologists in their study of cellular function. These highly informative methods are termed Super-resolution techniques and are possilbe through the understanding of how fluorescent molecules behave and their subsequent manipulation. ESRIC has 3 super resolution microscopes - one is based at the Riccarton Campus of Heriot-Watt University and the other two at the IGMM, University of Edinburgh, near the Western General Hospital.
