Winning Name for Usher Building Café Announced

We are delighted to announce that the winning name for our wonderful new café is Usher 1898, submitted by Amanda Bradburn.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the naming process for the café which will be based at the Usher Building at Edinburgh BioQuarter. The response exceeded our expectations and we really enjoyed going through all the submissions.

The chosen name holds historical significance, referring to a pivotal moment in the history of public health, when the first Chair of Public Health in the UK was established here at The University of Edinburgh. The ‘Bruce and John Usher Chair of Public Health’ then sat at the core of the first Usher Institute building, completed in 1902.

Usher 1898 perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the Usher Institute, reflecting our rich history and the pioneering role played in the field of public health. Congratulations to Amanda Bradburn for her insightful and meaningful suggestion; as a token of our appreciation, she will receive a £20 voucher redeemable at any ACE café.

Under the management of The University of Edinburgh’s Accommodation Catering and Events (ACE) team, Usher 1898 is scheduled to open in 2024. The café is designed to be a welcoming space, with the well-being of our community in mind. Its interior will feature free-flowing circulation, a variety of seating options, and a beautiful ambiance for visitors to enjoy a diverse range of hot and cold food and drink options.

We look forward to extending a warm welcome to you at Usher 1898. Our vision is for it to become a vibrant hub for the local community, inviting individuals not only to savour delicious offerings but to also engage with the Usher Institute and our colleagues across the Edinburgh BioQuarter. Together, let’s continue our shared journey toward transforming health in society by working with people, populations, and their data.
