Our masters by research programmes prepare you for PhD study. They are all recognised across Europe and beyond (Bologna compatible).
Most programmes involve 12 months of full time study. You may be able to study part-time, either on-campus on online.
Research masters provide students with preparation and training for PhD research. They are also a postgraduate qualification in their own right and not all masters by research students ultimately progress to a PhD.
You will be trained in your chosen discipline area through original investigation and supervised research, either on an individual basis or as part of a research team
Some research masters also include a strong taught component. This varies, depending on the programme.
The precise focus of your research is agreed between you and your supervisor. Programmes of study are tailored to meet your individual requirements.
Masters by research programmes are listed alongside research degrees in the degree finder.
Masters by Research programmes typically comprise 90 ECTS credits (180 Edinburgh credits).
All of our postgraduate masters awards are fully Bologna compatible, which means that they are recognised across Europe.
