The School of History, Classics and Archaeology was thrilled to hear of Professor Douglas Cairns’ election to the Fellowship of the British Academy. Professor Cairns is one of 52 Fellows from UK universities, with a further 20 – known as Corresponding Fellows – elected from universities in the US, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Italy and France.

Professor Cairns said, “I’m overwhelmed to receive such an honour, and to have received so many supportive messages from existing Fellows and from friends and colleagues in the University and beyond. The really gratifying thing about election to the BA is that it depends entirely on the evaluation of the UK’s leading scholars in one’s own field. I’m deeply honoured to receive such an unexpected accolade from my fellow Classicists."

His election crowns a very successful year for Professor Cairns, beginning with an Anneliese Maier Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and election to a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He also received a BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant in March of this year and was recently named as the inaugural Mercator Fellow at Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz.

The School sends its warmest congratulations to Professor Cairns.
