Postgraduate entry requirements for students from China.

Entry requirements to our programmes vary and programmes in great demand will require higher entry grades.

Postgraduate taught programmes

To apply, you should have:

  • a first degree from a university on our Priority List of Chinese universities or a recognised university.
  • minimum grades between 80-85%. 

Specific grades required for each programme

Entry into our high-demand programmes will require higher grades. To find the required grades for each degree programme:

  1. Search for a degree programme on the Degree Finder
  2. Check the programme’s ‘Band’ letter (A, B, C or D) listed under ‘entry requirements'.
  3. Find the entry requirements for each band shown below.

Band A: a minimum of 85% awarded by a university on our Priority List

Band B: a minimum of 80% awarded by a university on our Priority List

Band C: a minimum of 80%, awarded by a university on our Priority List

OR a minimum of 85% (“normal” level) from any recognised university

Band D: a minimum of 80% from any recognised university

Priority List of Chinese universities

For some universities listed there are further requirements around subject area or discipline and grading scales. Full details are given on the list.

PhD programmes

Typically, entry to PhD study requires a masters degree in a related or relevant subject, and a research proposal.

However, entry requirements vary by programme, and you should check the detailed entry requirements are listed under each programme on the Degree Finder.

Degrees jointly awarded by Chinese and UK universities

If your degree was taught in China and jointly awarded by a Chinese and a UK university, you must meet our entry requirements with the grades that you achieve from each institution. The entry requirements for UK qualifications for each programme can be found on the Degree Finder.

If you have studied on a 2+2 programme and transferred to a UK university to complete the second half of your degree, your final grades must meet our entry requirements for UK qualifications.

English Language requirements

All applicants are required to demonstrate a level of English language competency, regardless of their nationality or country of residence. These requirements are listed by programme.
