Introduction to Postgraduate Research

Who is this event for?

If you're  thinking about Edinburgh as a possible choice for postgraduate research, this online event is a fantastic way to find out more from staff and current students. It is aimed at those who are thinking about applying but applicants and offer holders may also find some sessions useful. 

What does it include?

The event comprises four live webinar sessions and you can pick which ones you would like to attend. 

Time Session Title Session Description
09:00am-10:00am (BST) An introduction to research degrees This introductory session is for anyone interested in pursuing a research degree (PhD or research Masters). Come along to discover what a research degree is all about, what you need to consider before applying, where to find more information and some of the key dates and deadlines.
10:00am-11:00am (BST) What is a PhD and How to Apply This session, delivered by the Doctoral College, will outline what a PhD degree is for and where it might lead. We will help you understand what the transition from undergraduate or masters degree to research degree might entail and also how it can be done if you have been out of formal education. We will look at the application process such as finding a supervisor, applying on-line and tips to write a good application.
12:30pm-1:30pm (BST) Ask our Students: Panel Discussion Current Postgraduate Research students and recent graduates will take centre stage to share their particular experiences, ready to answer any questions you may have about postgraduate researcher life.
3:00pm-4:00pm (BST) Applying for PhD Funding This session will briefly outline funding available to support you financially. We will cover university scholarships and some examples of external scholarships. We will also explain what the university will provide to help you complete your degree: supervision, training, mental health and well-being support and networks. There will be short introductory talks followed by a question and answer section.

You will get the most out of this event by attending the live sessions, as you will have the chance to participate and ask questions.

However, the sessions will also be recorded. If you register but can't make the live event, you will be send a link to these recordings so you can watch them in your own time.
