Runners enjoy community spirit in the Hop Run

Students and staff from across the University community took part in this weekends Hop Run.

The event was organised by Durty Events who also work in collaboration with Edinburgh University Sports Union to deliver the Edinburgh Winter Run (EWR).

The route

The route begins at the iconic Rosslyn Chapel before meandering through the undulating Roslin Glen, and finishing at Stewarts brewery, the sponsors of the event. The Glen was once the location for gunpowder factories and the route goes past ruins while utilising disused railway lines and trails, cutting through the ancient woodland.

Community spirit

120 staff and students from the University took part in the Hop Run, with many places funded through the Sports Union’s participation grants.

The EWR showcased how impactful this kind of event can be for community building and creating a sense of place for students and staff of the University. By removing barriers to participation and harnessing community spirit, staff and students felt comfortable and supported to participate in this event and improve their physical, mental and social health.

Learn to Run

There were a number of runners from The University of Edinburgh Sport & Exercise’s Learn to Run programme. The Learn to Run programme has been another big success for the Active Lives team this year, seeing students and staff take their first steps in to their running career in a supported environment. This cohort of runners thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to take part in this event, particularly alongside so many other members of the University community.

The Edinburgh Winter Run 2024

The Edinburgh Winter Run will return in January 2024 and further announcements will be made in the autumn.
