Successful Service Launch of Library Membership Registration

The Library Self Registration Service was successfully delivered on 26th January through the LMP006 project.

The project scope was to feed visitor data into  the Library Management Platform, Alma, with the aim to improve the library member registration process and library access for Alumni, public reference users, SCONUL Access members, NHS Lothian Staff and fee-paying external borrowers.

A new library web form is available within the ‘Joining the Library ‘ web pages and also at the library kiosk machines for walk in library members to use.

Library members are issued with yellow Smart cards to gain access in to the Main Library and across site libraries. These cards operate with access controlled doors to allow users to enter and leave libraries as is currently in place through the proximity card speed lanes, turnstiles and doors.

The delivery of this new service will remove a number of manual processes within the Library Helpdesks, feed library membership data directly into Alma and also ceases the issue of paper membership cards. One of the key benefits of the project is this will be a more efficient way for the Helpdesks to manage these library memberships.

The project is a good example of collaboration and team work across a number of IS areas: Applications Division, Help Services, Library & University Collections Information Systems and ITI Telephone Operations in making the changes possible to deliver this service.
