New Students

Arriving early

Information for students who arrive early (before Welcome Week)

If you are considering moving to Edinburgh early (i.e. in the days/weeks leading up to Welcome Week), then there are a few things you need to think about. This includes where you will stay (if you cannot move into your accommodation until a later date) and any visa implications if you are an international student.

It is also important to remember that you will be limited to what you can do as a student if you arrive early. For example, you won't be able to access University buildings around campus, or borrow books from the library until you collect your University student card, which will be available from Welcome Week onwards.

Arriving before Welcome Week

If you plan to arrive in Edinburgh before your accommodation lease start date, then you will need to book your own short-term accommodation.

There may be some short-term University accommodation available for students who need to arrive early in Edinburgh. Please get in touch with the Accommodation Allocation team to investigate any options available to you: accom.allocations@ed.ac.uk

If you would prefer to find other short-term private accommodation, then you can look at the following websites for B&Bs, hotel, and hostel accommodation in Edinburgh:

University accommodation

If you are going to be living in University-owned accommodation you will be able to move in from 10:00 (BST time) on your lease start date.

Sending luggage early

There are no storage facilities within any University-owned accommodation sites, so please do not arrange for your luggage to be sent in advance of your lease start date.

Your Arrival Pass

Your Arrival Pass is a useful online document that includes:

  • Assigned room number
  • Address of residence
  • Move-in instructions

You do not need to print your Arrivals Pass as accommodation staff will not be collecting these from you. If you do print your Arrival Pass you will need to keep this somewhere secure or dispose of it safely yourself.

Visa restrictions

If you are an international student and want to arrive early, make sure you check any restrictions on your visa before traveling as in some cases you will be limited in the time you can arrive prior to your course starting.
