Council Tax and Student Exemption


Council tax is a charge from your local council for services like transport and waste. Full-time students are usually exempt, but you may need to register.

If you live in purpose-built student accommodation, your building is usually exempt from council tax. However, if you live in privately managed student accommodation, you may still need to provide a council tax exemption letter to your accommodation provider.

If you live in privately rented accommodation you still need to apply for your council tax exemption on the council website.  If you have given permission for the university to share your details with the council when you registered then you may not need to provide a council tax exemption letter. If you live with a non-student, they will be responsible for paying the council tax bill and may be eligible for a 25% single-person discount
