After a BSc in Biology at Imperial College London, Emilly did an MSc at the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine in immunology of infectious diseases. Her MSc project investigated the impact of macrophage phenotypes on outcome of tuberculosis infection. She then moved to Edinburgh to do her PhD on the host-dependent molecular interaction between macrophages and Staphylococcus aureus, supervised by Prof Ross Fitzgerald and Prof David Hume.

Emily completed her PhD in November 2019, moving on to become a policy officer for the Microbiology Society.
