Professor Fernando Martinez awarded honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh

This World Asthma Day, we are delighted to announce that Professor Fernando Martinez, Chair of the International Advisory Board at the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research, has been selected for an Honorary Degree from the University of Edinburgh.

Professor Martinez will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Medicine in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements, and numerous other professional highlights, in the field of respiratory medicine.

He will be presented with his Honorary Degree in November 2019.

Driving forward our understanding of asthma

The announcement comes as we recognise World Asthma Day – an annual event organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.

“Many congratulations to Fernando on this well-deserved achievement.

"Throughout his career, Fernando Martinez has contributed greatly towards global efforts to improve our understanding of asthma. His 1995 work on asthma and wheezing in children changed how the disease was understood and set the stage for future research in this field. His current work puts him at the forefront of research into risk factors for asthma.

"We are delighted to have someone of his standing to serve as Chair of our International Advisory Board, providing strategic advice and support in the development of our Centre.”
