Funding opportunities

This programme aims to disseminate medical image analysis knowledge, skills, and understanding, enabling effective and efficient medical image analysis which can be used both clinically and commercially.

Covering the physics of imaging and related techniques, there is also focus on specialised content covering image processing and analysis.

Students will also be able to make use of the MATLAB computing environment and programming language.

This programme harnesses our expertise in image processing and analysis, which will allow learners to train in this field via an online learning environment.

Access world class teaching at the University of Edinburgh while maintaining your local professional and personal commitments where you live.

Our online students not only have access to Edinburgh’s excellent resources, but also become part of a supportive online community, bringing together students and tutors from around the world.

Students will be required to access materials, discussion boards, references, activities and other online learning tools, via the internet.

You may take up to 30 credits per semester.

Core courses:

  • Techniques and Physics (20 credits)
  • Practical Image Analysis 1 (10 credits)
  • Practical Image Analysis 2 (10 credits)
  • Image Analysis (10 credits)
  • Common image processing techniques 2 (10 credits)

Postgraduate Professional Development

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.

Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.

PgCert (ICL)Applied Medical Image AnalysisUp to 2 YearsPart-time Intermittent StudyProgramme structure 2024/25
  1. Demonstrate subject specific knowledge and understanding in theoretical and practical aspects of Medical Image Analysis and Processing.
  2. Develop specialised skills and critical understanding of advanced image analysis and processing principles using the MATLAB platform.
  3. Gain critical insight into challenges underpinning image analysis, including image enhancement and compensating for artefacts.
  4. Apply specialised skills in image analysis and processing through independent and autonomous activity and communicate outcomes to a range of audiences.
  5. Critically appraise various machine learning architectures and algorithms used in image segmentation, clustering and classification.

Medical image analysis and processing has great significance in the field of medicine, especially in non-invasive treatment and clinical study.

There is a clear need for the accurate interpretation and analysis of medical images, which often involves the need of a computer aided system to understand the image, the image structure and to know what it means.

We anticipate that this programme will help learners from a range of disciplines to acquire a knowledge base & skill set which will support engagement and employment in the field of image processing and analysis.

These entry requirements are for the 2025/26 academic year and requirements for future academic years may differ. Entry requirements for the 2026/27 academic year will be published on 1 Oct 2025.
