Vice Principal's welcome for online students

Hello. My name is Colm Harmon, and I'm the Vice Principal Students at the University of Edinburgh. I'm delighted to welcome you as you join one of our online degree programmes. We're proud to have you join our diverse and global community that brings together perspectives from around the world. With around 50,000 students at the University of Edinburgh, about 10% are studying an online degree. 

The university has been a pioneer in online postgraduate education since 2005. Whether you're studying on campus or online, you are an integral part of our vast and extraordinary community of learners. From day one, you'll have the opportunity to connect with fellow students, teachers, and researchers who are leaders in their field, but also with our extensive network of alumni. These connections are core to our programmes, fostering collaboration, innovation, and lifelong friendships. 

As you begin your academic journey, we encourage you to visit the website for new online students where you'll find dedicated and valuable information, resources, and guidance to support your transition to online learning. You'll have access to a range of online resources to support you during your time as a student with us. Something we are very proud of at the university is our fabulous library with lots of resources, both historic and recent. Our online library offers you an extensive collection of ebooks, e journals, and other resources to aid your studies. Ed help, our online help desk is also at your service for any queries related to the library, IT, student finance, and student administration. Our support areas cover a range of areas including counselling, online study skills courses, careers advice, and much more. Ensuring you receive the assistance you need to balance your studies with life's other demands. 

We recognise that being an online learner presents its own set of unique challenges. We care very much about your welfare and your well being. We know that online learners are subject to all the usual pressures of a student studying at any university, but often add to it a whole series of other life pressures, whether it be financial or social, because of work, or because of family or caring responsibilities. We know that there are many demands on your time and because of that, we have a whole infrastructure of welfare support available to you at the university. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Reach out whenever you require help or advice to your programme lead, your student advisor, or directly to the support service. We're deeply committed to learning and deeply embedded in the city and country, but also the world, and you sit firmly as important bridges to the world. I want to thank you for that. It's always a source of pride for me and for all of us when you choose to study here. We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities the university offers, make global connections, enjoy yourself, and take pride in taking this step in your life.
