Philosophy and Psychology staff shortlisted for Teaching Awards
Sarah Stanton, Brian Rabern and John Dorsch have been shortlisted for the 2021 EUSA Teaching Awards
Congratulations to psychology lecturer, Dr Sarah Stanton, philosophy lecturer, Dr Brian Rabern, and philosophy PhD tutor, John Dorsch, who have been shortlisted for EUSA's 2021 Teaching Awards. These awards celebrate staff who make a positive impact on students' learning experiences across the University of Edinburgh.
Twenty-nine staff members at the University made it to the shortlist based on over 2,800 Teaching Award nominations that EUSA received in 2021.
Outstanding Course
Sarah Stanton is shortlisted in this category, which recognises inspiring and exciting courses, for her Year 3 undergraduate course Science of Close Relationships.
Dr Stanton, when designing this course has gone above and beyond to provide us with many additional materials, interesting lecture and reading content, engaging Q&As and a lot of good energy and support. While this is not an easy year for anyone, Dr Stanton really made sure to make her course as accessible and similar to in-person teaching as possible.
Outstanding Innovation in Digital Teaching
Brian Rabern has been shortlisted in this category, which recognises the excellent use of technology to deliver teaching and engage students in their learning.
Dr Rabern creates lectures that are genuinely entertaining, meaning we the students are able to better maintain focus on the educational content we're supposed to be absorbing. Their engaging nature ultimately makes them more informative. Dr Rabern has taken the current circumstances in stride and created a class that doesn't suffer from the online format, but takes advantage of it and really delivers a quality curriculum.
Student Tutor of the Year
John Dorsch has been shortlisted in this category, which recognises student tutors who have created an engaging space for learning.
John always puts empathy with his tutees first, approaching his pupils in good faith and out of a genuine desire to get them as excited about the subject as he is. A little kindness can go a very long way, and I am thoroughly convinced that John's kindness has left every single one of my peers in tutorial in a better and more confident place.
