Teacher / leader training

Find information on our teacher / leader Supercytes training events.

Attending our teacher / leader training events is a great way to find out how to use the Supercytes resource:

  • hands on experience with the Supercytes card game
  • hear our research scientists deliver the immunology & inflammation presentation
  • ask questions about the science

Curriculum integration

Supercytes can be used to contribute to the following areas of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence:

Level 2

  • Topical Science
  1. SCN 2 - 20a: Through research and discussion I have an appreciation of the contribution that individuals are making to scientific discovery and invention and the impact this has made on society.
  • Biological systems: Body Systems and Cells
  1. SCN 2 - 12a: By investigating some body systems and potential problems which they may develop, I can make informed decisions to help me to maintain my health andwellbeing.

Level 3

  • Topical Science
  1. SCN 3 - 20a: I have collaborated with others to find and present information on how scientists from Scotland and beyond have contributed to innovative research and development.
  • Biological systems: Body Systems and Cells
  1. SCN 3 - 12a: I have explored the structure and function of organs and organ systems and can relate this to the basic biological processes required to sustain life.
  2. SCN 3 - 13a: Using a microscope, I have developed my understanding of the structure and variety of cells and of their functions.
  3. SCN 3 - 13b: I have contributed to investigations into the different types of microorganisms and can explain how their growth can be controlled.
  4. SCN 3 - 13c: I have explored how the body defends itself against disease and can describe how vaccines can provide protection

Level 4

  • Topical Science
  1. SCN 4 - 20a: I have researched new developments in science and can explain how their current or future applications might impact on modern life.
  • Biological systems: Body Systems and Cells
  1. SCN 4 - 12a: I can explain how biological actions which take place in response to external and internal changes work to maintain stable body conditions.

National 5 Biology

  • Develop and apply knowledge and understanding of biology
  • Develop an understanding of biology’s role in scientific issues and relevant applications of
  • biology, including the impact these could make in society and the environment
  • Develop problem solving skills in a biology context
  • Develop the knowledge and skills for more advanced learning in biology
  • Cell Biology : Multicellular OrganismsCells, tissues and organs:
    • Specialisation of cells, in animals and plants, leads to the formation of a variety of tissues and organs. Groups of organs which work together form systems.
    • Examine a variety of cells from different tissues to relate their structure to function.
    • Multicellular organisms have more than one cell type and are made up of tissues and organs. Organs perform different functions. The cells in organs are specialised for their function. Specialisation can be applied to all named tissues in this Unit.

Higher Human Biology

  • Develop and apply knowledge and understanding of biology
  • Develop an understanding of biology’s role in scientific issues and relevant applications of
  • biology, including the impact these could make in society and the environment
  • Develop problem solving skills in a biology context
  • Develop the knowledge and skills for more advanced learning in biology
  • Human Cells: 1 Division and differentiation in human cells:
  • Immunology and Public Health: 1 Non-specific defences
  • Immunology and Public Health: 2 Specific cellular defences
  • Immunology and Public Health: 4 Active immunisation and vaccination and the
  • evasion of specific immune response by pathogens

Interdisciplinary learning

National Improvement Framework

Skills for work/life and health and wellbeing programme:

  • Numeracy: Mathematics is used comparing scores when playing Supercytes: The Immune cell Standoff card game, particularly when tactical treatment cards are used, with multiple cumulative and player-specific scores to be calculated each round.
  • STEM Literacy: Reading for information: getting the necessary information from the presentation to complete the worksheet, and reading from the cards when playing Supercytes: The Immune cell Standoff card game, particularly when tactical treatment cards are used.
  • Problem solving: Strategic game play and problem solving when playing Supercytes: The Immune cell Standoff card game, when tactical treatment cards are used.
  • Working with others: Supercytes: The Immune cell Standoff card game is played in groups and can involve strategic partnerships.
  • Self-directed learning / Creating: Supercytes-inspired projects can involve research, writing, IT skills, drama, art and more.
