Demonstrating EdWeb

Content reuse

This video highlights how easy it is to add reusable content ('assets') into EdWeb.

Video transcript

This video will show you how easy it is to integrate reusable content into EdWeb through the asset store feature. All pieces of reusable content such as images, documents and contact boxes, are referred to within EdWeb as “assets”.

While editing a page, you can use the asset store flyout on the right-hand side to create and apply assets to your pages.

You can add images and documents, and create contact boxes and HTML blocks, using the controls on the left. When adding new images and files to the system, it is possible to add multiple files at once, either by dragging and dropping into this box, or by using the “add files” feature.

When adding images and documents into EdWeb, you should use “tags” to tag your images and documents with keywords in order to make them searchable within the asset store.

You should give meaningful titles to your images and documents when you add them to EdWeb, again so they are easier to find within the asset store.

The default when adding images or files to EdWeb is for them to be available throughout the entire University for reuse on all pages. If you do not want this to be possible, you should uncheck this box – “available for reuse”.

At the time of upload, you should also set the group audience who are able to edit the asset.

There are mandatory fields to confirm you have consent for use and copyright for your images.

You can also create contact boxes using the asset store flyout on the right.

You can set images within your contact assets – these must be 100 by 130 pixels in size.

It is also possible to add HTML assets to your pages, if you have the necessary permissions within the system as a “technical user”. When creating an HTML asset, you must decide whether the HTML asset will be available for reuse throughout the University, and the group audience who are able to edit this asset.

You must set notes about what the HTML asset will do, so that anyone who applies it to their pages can find this out easily. A popular use for the HTML asset are the University’s third-party content services, otherwise known as “widgets”.

When creating an HTML asset, EdWeb will strip out any invalid HTML (or HTML tags that are not permitted) before saving.

It is also possible to make pages available for re-use. On the references tab, you can tick the “make available for re-use on multiple pages” box – this will make it appear in the asset store along with images, documents and other reusable pieces of content.

Applying your assets to the page is also very simple. You must first locate it within the asset store, and then either press the “insert” button, or drag and drop these into the page where you wish to add them, and they will appear on your pages.
