Arrange setup of a supported Mac
The steps to follow to get a Mac onto the supported desktop.
Step 1 - Preparation
- Before switching on the Mac, from the side of its box, take note of:
- The model (iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook, Mac Pro)
- The Mac's serial number
- The Mac's specifications (e.g. 2.8GHz Intel i7, 16GB RAM)
- If it is an iMac, a Mac Mini or a Mac Pro, note down the 'Ethernet ID', in the format 00:11:22:aa:bb:cc. This is not required for MacBooks.
- The Mac's operating system, if known. For compatibility queries, please see Supported Mac operating systems
- Please provide the IS Helpline with this information, as well as the following:
- Your exact location (room and building)
- Your contact telephone number
- Your School / department
Step 2 - Setup
- iMacs, Mac Minis or Mac Pros for use on-campus will be registered on the University network in advance.
- A support colleague will arrange for the Mac to be enrolled into the supported desktop.
- The Mobile Device Management profile installed by the enrolment may need to be approved locally on the machine.
- The University Core applications and configuration will be installed, e.g. Office applications, Self Service portal for software and printers etc.
- If the computer is a MacBook, FileVault 2 full disk encryption will be set up and a recovery key escrowed with Information Services.
- The support colleague will arrange for data backup to be put in place and explain its usage.
