Data Storage and Backups
Accessing and backing up your University files.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for saving files that you want to be backed up into the appropriate location.
On the University supported Mac desktop, you can do so in one of the following ways:
1. OneDrive For Business (recommended)
The OneDrive For Business sync client is a Dropbox-like service that performs a bi-directional sync of files in a local folder up to a cloud-based backup server. You can use it as follows:
- Run the 'OneDrive' app from inside the Applications folder.
- Enter your username in the format [username]@ed.ac.uk , press 'Sign in', enter your Office 365 password and 'Sign in'.
- Follow the instructions for choosing a local OneDrive folder for your files and starting the sync.
- Your files show green tick icons denoting when they have synched up to the server.

2. Network homespace
Desktop Macs
A shortcut to your network homespace on the University backup servers is automatically added next to the Trash icon on University Desktop Macs.
MacBooks
On supported MacBooks, you can mount your network homespace as follows. Skip to step 4 if you are already connected to the Uni network.
- Register for the Virtual Private Network service.
- Install the FortiClient VPN client from the Self Service application.
- Run it and log in to make your computer part of the Uni network.
- Click on the NoMAD Menu icon (triangle with a green tick) up near the clock and choose 'My Network Home'.
- The first time you will be asked to press 'Connect' and enter your login details in the format ed\username and your password.
3. University DataSync service
The University also provides its own Dropbox-like synching service, DataSync, that enables you to synchronise data not only with your own network homespace but also other School or group shared spaces.
Although not installed by default, the 'ownCloud for DataSync' software is available via the Self Service application on managed Macs. For more info, please see:
