Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (CMVM EDIC) - chaired by CMVM leads Professor Karen Chapman and Dr Sharon Boyd.
Local equality, diversity and inclusion groups within the College:
- BioQuarter Campus Local Group - co-led by Professor Julia Dorin and Dr Jenna Cash. The BioQuarter group has four thematic sub-groups:

CMVM Research Staff Committee
The CMVM Research Staff Committee (RSC) brings together College and University academic and professional staff involved with the support and training of early career research (ECR) staff with representatives of the ECR community, to discuss and develop issues relating to researcher experience and support.
The role of the committee is to develop and co-ordinate support for ECRs and to disseminate information relating to ECR experience for the College, including:
- Training and development
- Careers in and beyond academia
- Funding
- Translational and entrepreneurship opportunities
- Health and wellbeing
- Research culture
- Citizenship
- Teaching opportunities and accreditation
- Mentoring, equality
- Diversity and integration
- Open science
- Widening participation
- Public engagement.
The RSC is co-convened by the Head of ECR Experience, Edinburgh Medical School Prof Gillian Gray (Centre for Cardiovascular Science) and Co-Head of ECR Experience, Easter Bush Dr Joe Rainger, Roslin Institute.
CMVM Researcher Experience Committee
The CMVM Researcher Experience Committee (REC) brings together college academic and professional staff involved with postgraduate student (PGS) and ECR support and training, with representatives of the PGS and ECR communities, to discuss and develop issues relating to researcher experience and support.
The CMVM REC:
- disseminates information relating to PGS and ECR experience (including Quality Assurance, Supervision, Translational Training, Careers, and Health and Wellbeing)
- brings together college academic and professional staff involved with postgraduate student (PGS) and ECR support and training, with representatives of the PGS and ECR communities, to discuss and develop issues relating to researcher experience and support
- disseminates information relating to PGS and ECR experience (including Quality Assurance, Supervision, Translational Training, Careers, and Health and Wellbeing)
Postgraduate Researcher Experience Committee
Led by Professor Patrick Hadoke, Director of Postgraduate Student & Early Career Researcher Experience.
Edinburgh Medical Research Ethics Committee (EMREC)
The Edinburgh Medical Research Ethics Committee assists members of staff or postgraduate research students at Edinburgh Medical School who are planning to conduct research on humans, their data or tissues that does not involve NHS patients, data or tissue.
EMREC has two Chairs: Dr Christine Campbell and Professor Sue Fletcher-Watson who also act as co-Directors of Research Ethics for the College. The EMREC is coordinated by Dr Lena Lorenz and currently has 17 permanent members and reviewers. They are a pool of experienced academic and clinical College or NHS staff as well as a number of members of the public or research staff at different Higher Education institutions.

Centre for Cardiovascular Science (CVS) Research Integrity Team
The CVS Research Integrity Team aims to foster a culture in which research integrity is valued and respected, and to promote an inclusive and supportive environment for staff and students. The group also focuses on developing and maintaining fair, high and consistent standards of research practice.
Led by Professor Karen Chapman, Academic Lead for Integrity.
