George Heriot’s school visit to give pupils an insight into animal research

March 2017: Scientists discuss animal welfare and ethics with sixth form pupils.

The Director of Veterinary Services at The University of Edinburgh and a Postdoc from the CIR visited George Heriot’s school to give a talk to sixth form pupils on the use of animals in research. The presentation, which included an interactive quiz, aimed to the give the pupils an insight into why animal research is conducted and the steps that are taken to help replace, reduce and refine the use of animals in research. The laws and regulations that govern the use of animals were also highlighted. Following the presentation pupils were encouraged to ask questions to allow for an open discussion about both the ethics and logistics of animal research.
