Infection Medicine Awarded Benter Foundation Grant for Dementia Research

Research on the association of viral infections with dementia has been given a boost by the Benter Foundation.

The laboratory of Prof.Jürgen Haas has been awarded a grant from the Benter Foundation. The grant is worth $112,200 and, for the period of 8 months, will support the division’s epidemiological dementia research.

The aim of the research is to establish whether there is an association between adult vaccination and dementia. This study involves collaboration with researchers in Denmark, Germany, and Scotland and is conducted under the leadership of Prof. Jürgen Haas, Head of Infection Medicine, Prof. Richard Lathe, Honorary Fellow, and Dr Christian Schnier, Senior Epidemiologist. The research is part of the wider exciting study of the involvement of infectious organisms in the development of dementia. It is a continuation of a project in which the research group has been exploring whether antiherpetic medication was associated with dementia.
