Professor elected to Royal Society of Edinburgh

The School was delighted to learn that Professor Mirko Canevaro has been elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), Scotland’s National Academy, recently announced its 2022 intake of 80 Fellow from the arts, business, public service civil society and academia worldwide and the School was delighted to see Professor Mirko Canevaro, Professor of Greek History, as one of them.

Already a Member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh Young Academy of Scotland, Mirko has also been awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize in recognition of his research achievements, appointed Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe, and awarded both the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Thomas Reid Medal for Excellence in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and the University of Edinburgh Chancellor’s Rising Star Award.

Mirko said, "I’m honoured to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, joining so many remarkable scholars and scientists. And I’m particularly grateful that it is the Scottish national academy awarding me this honour. Ever since I moved to Scotland almost a decade ago, I’ve wanted, and striven, to become truly a part of this nation: of its community, academic and otherwise. I’ve felt at home here as I’ve rarely felt elsewhere, after leaving my home country, Italy. So this election feels like I’m doing something right, not just in the discipline, but in that respect too."

Professor Ewen Cameron, Head of School, commented,"I was on the panel when Mirko was first appointed to the University as a Chancellor's Fellow in 2012 and I am absolutely delighted to see this additional evidence that he has more than fulfilled the potential that was obvious at that point in his career. I am sure that colleagues will join me in congratulating Mirko on his election to Scotland's National Academy."
