Introducing MA Portuguese
Portuguese is the ninth most widely spoken language in the world. From Brazil to Mozambique, the many countries where it's spoken have fascinatingly rich and varied cultures.
Studying Portuguese at the University of Edinburgh will provide you with intensive training in the written and spoken aspects of the language.
It is also your gateway to an extraordinary range of literature, film, music and arts from Europe, Latin America and Lusophone Africa.
Why Edinburgh
We are unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working.
Another attractive characteristic of this programme is its flexibility. This means that in Years 1 and 2, you’ll choose option courses drawn from a broad list of disciplines in addition to your core subject.
One of the most attractive characteristics of this programme is its flexibility. This means that, in Years 1 and 2 (pre-Honours), you’ll choose other subjects drawn from a wide range of disciplines in addition to your core subject of Portuguese.
As well as broadening your education, this may enable you to change the focus of your programme, if you discover that you’d like to take one of these other subjects into Years 3 and 4 (Honours).
Year 1
You will study Portuguese 1, which caters for both beginners and more advanced students.
You will be introduced to Portuguese-speaking literature through a selection of short stories from Mozambique, Angola, Brazil and Portugal.
Option courses
You'll complete your Year 1 studies with option courses chosen from a wide range offered by the University of Edinburgh.
These include - but are not limited to - courses in:
business
politics
social policy
informatics
economics
history
classics
archaeology
philosophy
linguistics
divinity
You can also opt to study another language, with classes suitable for complete beginners.
Year 2
You will continue to develop your spoken and written language with Portuguese Language 2.
You will also study the cultures and the societies of the Portuguese-speaking world through literature, film and the arts.
Option courses
As in Year 1, you will also choose other courses from a wide range offered by the University.
These include a great selection in European languages and cultures, allowing you to study literature, film and theatre in themed and comparative contexts, and/or to study Basque or Catalan.
Year 3
Year abroad
If international travel restrictions allow, you’ll spend Year 3 in a Portuguese-speaking country, turning classroom learning into living engagement with Lusophone culture.
You will either study or complete a work/teaching placement.
During your year abroad, we'll aim to ensure your experience is as beneficial as possible to your final year, as well as to your wider language learning, cultural awareness and skills development.
For example, you'll take an e-learning course which will count as part of your Year 3 mark and prepare you for your Year 4 language courses.
Alternative arrangements
If international travel is not possible, you will be offered an alternative means of engaging with Portuguese, enabling you to meet your learning outcomes and preparing you for your final year.
Year 4
You will study advanced language courses and choose from a range of specialist courses on Portugal, Brazil or Lusophone Africa, covering:
history
literature
film
culture
You will also complete your dissertation.
