Information about our Education programmes for applicants and offer holders, including the Physical Education programme.

At Moray House, we offer world-class programmes that prepare you for a career in teaching.  

You will study at our Holyrood campus, situated just off the historic Royal Mile, in the heart of Edinburgh. We have a vibrant student community, and the campus offers social spaces to relax with friends or study. We also have an on-site library and swimming pool and we are based just around the corner from the Pleasance Sports Complex and Gym, one of the best university sports and gym facilities in the UK. 

Students completing any of our teaching degree programmes or the MA Learning in Communities will also take their learning further afield on professional experience and practice placements.

  • MA Physical Education students will be joining the largest cohort of PE teacher education students in the UK, benefiting from placement opportunities to supplement University-based learning. 
  • MA Primary Education with Gaelic students will also supplement learning with placement opportunities, with students on the Learners Pathway further benefiting from an immersion experience at higher education college, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, in Skye. 
  • MA Learning in Communities has been part of the Moray House School of Education and Sport curriculum for more than 50 years. Teaching is built on extensive expertise and supported by several placement opportunities. 
  • BA Childhood Practice students have the unique opportunity to mix study with work, earning an accredited degree while gaining experience in the early childhood learning and care sector. 

Accreditation

  • The MA Primary Education with Gaelic and the MA Physical Education programmes are both accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland. 
  • The MA Learning in Communities is accredited by the Community Learning and Development Standards Council in Scotland. 
  • The BA Childhood Practice is accredited by the Scottish Social Services. Graduates are eligible to register with the SSSC as a lead practitioner or manager. 

Students studying the MA Primary Education with Gaelic and the MA Physical Education programmes will also benefit from our unique partnership with mental health and wellbeing charity, Place2Be.

This programme prepares teachers to maintain mentally health classrooms while also supporting the mental health and wellbeing of student teachers themselves.

Education programmes at the University of Edinburgh are ranked 2nd in the UK for Graduate Prospects by the Complete University Guide 2025.

  • Graduates in MA Primary Education with Gaelic and MA Physical Education are qualified to teach and eligible for provisional registration from the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) in primary and/or secondary schools depending on their programme of study. Eligible graduates may also join a guaranteed, paid, one-year probationary teaching post. 
  • Graduates in BA Childhood Practice can register as lead professionals and managers in early learning and childcare, or train as a social worker, teacher or health promotion worker. 
  • MA Learning in Communities graduates are eligible for employment in a variety of roles, such as Community Learning and Development practitioners, in various educational and development settings.
