Why study Philosophy at Edinburgh

Philosophy has been taught at the University since its foundation in 1583 and offers a stimulating and flexible learning experience.

To study philosophy at Edinburgh is to immerse yourself in the life of one of the world’s great cultural cities, consistently voted one of the most liveable, and known globally for its annual arts festivals, rich history, and seasonal celebrations.

Edinburgh has long been, and remains a fitting place to study philosophy. The city has a distinguished place in the history of philosophy, having been home to David Hume and Adam Smith. Once the centre of the Scottish Enlightenment, now we are leading the discussion on a range of contemporary and diverse topics from the philosophy of racism and feminism to time travel.

What questions are we asking?

Philosophy at Edinburgh brings together leading researchers across a range of topics – from the history of philosophy to the philosophy of race and gender. You’ll be taught by experts addressing important questions as part of their research, as they teach you to ask questions of your own.

What do our students think?

Iona Fielding, UK, (2nd year Philosophy student)

"If you are harbouring any doubts about taking philosophy, dispel them immediately and apply. Contrary to popular belief, it is one of the most useful degrees you can come away with.

In this day and age, being different will give you the edge. It will give you the confidence to approach unknown situations, as you can apply your philosophy skillset to nearly everything you do. It’s a genuinely interesting course- it’s not a means to an end, but something you can become unconditionally passionate about."

Iona Fielding, MA Philosophy

"I chose to study Philosophy at Edinburgh because of the scope of course options that are offered, even at an undergraduate level. At the point of applying, I had no idea what area of philosophy I wanted to study and so the flexibility of the courses offered by Edinburgh was extremely appealing – even by the end of first year I have taken courses in morality, applied ethics, ancient philosophy and logic."
