Institute for Academic Development

As well as the support you'll receive from your School, the University’s Institute for Academic Development offers a range of guidance for your academic development.

Learning at university is a skill. Through the Institute for Academic Development, you'll be able to access the advice, support and resources to help you  achieve your potential and to feel confident about your learning. We support our students throughout their studies, from the first lecture through to graduation.

How we support you

As a student at Edinburgh, you'll have access to a range of free resources and support, including:

  • workshops on a range of topics e.g. getting the most out of lectures; managing reading; preparing for assignments; preparing for exams; writing a dissertation
  • self-study learning resources
  • 1-to-1 consultations to explore how you are learning, what you are comfortable with, and whether there are ways you could learn differently or more effectively
  • guidance on academic best practice.

Our support is available online and in-person. We hope this will  enable you to accommodate your existing commitments and to learn in a way that suits you best.
