Supporting Taught Postgraduates

Developing your English

Support to develop your English language skills

Many of our postgraduate students do not speak English as a native language, and we understand how challenging it can be to learn in another language.  To support our students, the University’s English Language Education unit provides self-study learning materials.

If you are a native speaker of English you may find these resources helpful too, especially if you are returning to studying, as they break down and explain some of the conventions of academic writing.

Independent study English language materials

The topics covered include including academic writing, grammar and presentations, plus advice such as reading and discussing academic texts and writing exam answers. There are modules on speaking and writing English as well as listening and note taking.

The resources are available to University of Edinburgh students from the links below.

The language challenge

If English is not your first language you may find working through the language challenge on the Prepare for Success website helpful.

On the site international students and tutors talk about typical language challenges students face when they first arrive.
