Free bus travel
In 2022, the Scottish Government introduced free nationwide bus travel for young people aged 5-21 who are residents in Scotland for most of the year, which means 6 months or more. This scheme enables under 22s to travel for free on nearly every bus service in Scotland, with a few exceptions like certain airport buses, city sightseeing buses, and night buses. To access this free travel, you need to apply for a National Entitlement Card or a Young Scot National Entitlement Card, with full instructions available on the website.
If you are aged 60 or over or have a disability, you are entitled to free nationwide bus travel around Scotland through the NEC scheme. If you are applying for an NEC on the grounds of a disability, you will be asked to provide proof of entitlement. A guide to acceptable proof of disability, as well as information about applying, can be found on the website.
Interest-free travel loan
The travel ticket loan scheme lets employees get an interest-free loan for the cost of rail season tickets. This loan is paid back over 10 months directly from your salary, after tax. To apply, you need to fill in an application form from the travel company you use and also a University loan application form.
Interest-free bike loan
The interest-free bike loan scheme offers University employees a way to buy a bicycle and associated safety equipment, like clothing and lights, with a loan up to £500, without any interest charges. Employees repay the loan in 10 equal monthly instalments directly from their salary, after tax. While the scheme doesn't offer savings, it helps spread the cost of a new bike over several months. It's particularly useful for part-time staff who might not qualify for the main Cycle to Work scheme. This interest-free bike loan scheme is different from the University's Cycle to Work scheme.
Cycle to Work scheme
The Cycle to Work scheme is designed to help you save money on a new bike to commute to work and to spread the cost of the bike over monthly tax-free instalments through your employer. The scheme can save you 32-47% on a bike and accessories. The University of Edinburgh scheme is provided through Halfords Cycle2Work. Employees can select bikes and/or accessories from over 1,000 independent bike stores, Halfords and Tredz, providing access to over 98% of bike brands.
