Living and working in the UK

Information for staff who are living and working in the UK following the UK leaving the EU.

(Updated 14 September 2021)

EEA/Swiss citizens who were living in the UK before 31 December 2020

To be able to continue living and working in the UK, you must have obtained evidence of your right to stay by applying to the EU Settlement Scheme.  The deadline for applications has now passed.  If you have not yet applied and you have ‘reasonable grounds’ for not applying by the deadline, you may be able to make a late application.

Information about late applications, including the list of reasonable grounds, can be found on the Home Office webpages.

EEA/Swiss citizens who came to the UK on/after 1 January 2021

If you arrived in the UK after 11 pm on 31 December 2020, you’ll need to have applied for and secured a visa under the UK’s new immigration system. More information can be found on the HR webpages:

Information for prospective staff

Irish citizens living and working in the UK

You are able to live and work in the UK without requiring immigration permission. You have a special status and are treated as being settled in the UK from the day you came to the UK. However, you can choose to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if you wish to obtain official confirmation of your settled status and indefinite right to live and work in the UK.

Please note that if you have a family member who originates from outside the UK or Ireland, they will need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, unless they have immigration permission under a different category, for example under the Points Based System, and want to remain on this route.

Non-EEA/Swiss close family members of EEA/Swiss citizens who were already living in the UK on 31 December 2020
