Visiting and non-graduating students (NGS)

"Visiting students" are classified as students who are studying or conducting research at the University for a short period of time - usually for less than or up to one year.

  • As a visiting student, you must be registered on a programme of study at another higher education institution, from which you plan to ultimately graduate.
  • Non-graduating students are individuals who are not registered on a degree programme , who take one or more taught courses or undertake supervised research at the University.
  • Both types of students are subject to the University’s regulations, policies and codes of practice.
  • There is an application process and fees will be charged.

Please read the following information carefully and familiarise yourself with our organisational structure to ensure your query reaches the correct person. They will then be able to advise you of the next steps in the application process.

ERASMUS+ traineeships

ERASMUS+ traineeships are a form of work placement arrangement which is distinct and separate from the University's ERASMUS+ contract requirement. Under this scheme, funding is available from the European Commission for students undertaking paid or voluntary work placements. The placement may be part of the student's home programme of study, or just something the applicant is interested in doing.

Traineeships can be covered by agreements between two institutions, when they can deliver important benefits and advantages to students and the Universities involved. In such agreements, the expectations and arrangements for all involved are clearly set out in advance.  However, individual students can also choose to apply to potential host universities without any prior bilateral agreement.

A student receives a stipend to cover living and travel costs, but the hosting University receives no money at all towards the costs that may be incurred, and must assume responsibility for the student's experience, including any confirmation that the student has completed academic elements of their programme of study. We do not charge any fees or pass on any costs to trainees joining us under this scheme.

Our policy is that normally we will only accept applications for incoming ERASMUS+ Traineeships that are part of a bilateral agreement. ERASMUS+ traineeship requests that are not part of a bilateral agreement will usually be declined.

Students are only permitted to be enrolled with us for maximum of 12 weeks. For initial enquiries, please contact the deanery you are interested in visiting, using the contacts in the table above (Visiting Students).

Further details on the traineeships can also be found on the ERASMUS+ website:
