Demonstrating EdWeb

What pages should be hidden?

Pages should only be hidden from navigation in very specific circumstances, when there is a clear reason you do not want users navigating to it.

Contact us

The 'Contact us' page must be hidden in navigation because every EdWeb page already contains a Contact us button. If Contact us is hidden, it will not be duplicated in the site navigation.

Example

The contact button on this site shows the contact link works, and how a page hidden in navigation displays.

Contact us

You can reset the contact link for that section from any overview page, to provide accurate local contact details

Reusable assets

If you are creating generic content for reuse, this should never display as a page in its own right, so EdWeb automatically removes it from navigation.

Content for re-use

Content separate from user journey

The only other time you should hide content is when you specifically don't want users to ever be able to navigate to it (although remember it may still come up in search). Examples include:

  • a form thank you page - the user sees this only when they have completed your form
  • an event booking confirmation - the user only sees this when they have booked the event
  • a page designed for a specific audience - so you can track the success of a campaign or provide a tailored message to a discrete group

Content to be deleted

EdWeb content can't currently be deleted. Instead, each site has a hidden 'Content to be removed' section. Include items you wish to eventually delete in this hidden section.

All content in this section should be in an unpublished state.

Landing pages

A landing page is a navigational page that is not an overview page or homepage and is usually hidden in navigation. You can use a landing page for a number for reasons, including to track the results of a marketing campaign and to communicate to a specific audience.

Confidential content - never use hidden pages

Never hide a page in navigation because it contains confidential information. Site visitors may still find your page. Consider using EASE protection instead.
